HSN codes & GST rates
The textile HSN table every workspace comes with, which codes a product can use, the allowed GST slabs, and how HSN and GST flow into invoices and returns.
Every product needs an HSN code (what the goods are, for GST) and a GST rate (how much tax is included in its price).
The HSN table#
Each workspace is created with a lookup table of every 4-digit HSN code from 5001 to 6310 — the textile chapters 50 to 63. A product's HSN code must be one of these codes; anything else is refused with Unknown HSN code … — not in the textile range.
| Chapter | Codes in the table | Covers | Default GST |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 5001–5099 | Silk, silk yarn, woven silk fabrics | 5% |
| 51 | 5100–5199 | Wool and animal hair; yarn and fabrics | 5% |
| 52 | 5200–5299 | Cotton, cotton yarn, woven cotton fabrics | 5% |
| 53 | 5300–5399 | Other vegetable fibres; paper yarn | 5% |
| 54 | 5400–5499 | Man-made filaments | 12% |
| 55 | 5500–5599 | Man-made staple fibres | 12% |
| 56 | 5600–5699 | Wadding, felt, nonwovens, twine, ropes | 12% |
| 57 | 5700–5799 | Carpets and floor coverings | 12% |
| 58 | 5800–5899 | Special woven fabrics, lace, embroidery | 5% |
| 59 | 5900–5999 | Coated or laminated fabrics | 12% |
| 60 | 6000–6099 | Knitted or crocheted fabrics | 5% |
| 61 | 6100–6199 | Apparel, knitted or crocheted | 5% |
| 62 | 6200–6299 | Apparel, not knitted | 5% |
| 63 | 6300–6310 | Other made-up textiles, sets, worn clothing | 5% |
The table holds every number in each chapter's range, so a code such as 5299 or 5100 is accepted even though it is not a real tariff heading — make sure you use the correct heading for your goods.
Common examples: 5208 woven cotton fabric (the form's default), 5407 synthetic filament fabric, 6203 men's suits and trousers, 6204 women's suits and dresses, 6211 other garments, 6302 bed and table linen.
GST rates#
A product's GST rate must be one of 0, 5, 12, 18 or 28%. The default per chapter in the table above is a starting point only — GST on garments and some fabrics depends on the sale value and changes with notifications. Set the rate your CA confirms.
How HSN and GST flow through#
| Where | Uses |
|---|---|
| POS and issued invoices | The product's GST rate to split each line into taxable value and GST |
| Invoice PDF | The HSN code and GST % on every line |
| GST output report and filing pack | HSN-wise summaries |
| E-invoice and e-way bill | HSN on each item |
| Barcode labels | HSN and GST % printed on the label |
Free-text lines on quotations and sales orders have no product, so they carry HSN 0000 and 0% GST when converted to invoices.
Changing a product's HSN or GST rate#
The Inventory screen has no edit form for these fields, so choose them carefully when adding a product. See Products.
